Before coming to the Bar, Jasmine worked as a Senior Caseworker at the charity INQUEST, assisting bereaved families in inquests raising issues of state accountability in psychiatric care, prison, police custody and immigration detention settings.
She has previously worked in Policy and Standards for the Health and Care Professions Council advising healthcare professionals on regulatory issues and fitness to practice. Before that, Jasmine was an Independent Mental Capacity Advocate advising decision-makers on mental capacity; serious medical treatment; accommodation decisions and the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.
Jasmine has a Master’s degree in Medical Law and Ethics.
She is an assisting lawyer for Not Beyond Redemption, providing free legal advice and representation to women who are in or who have left prison. She is also a member of the INQUEST Lawyers Group and the Court of Protection Bar Association.
In Jasmine’s clinical negligence practice she advises on liability, merits, causation and quantum. She has recently been instructed in matters which include negligent delays in diagnosis and treatment; and claims under the Law Reform (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1934 and the Fatal Accidents Act 1976.
Jasmine’s experience in health and social care fields enables her to grasp medical evidence quickly. She is confident discussing technical matters practically with both clients and experts.
In her personal injury work she represents both claimants and defendants, appearing in fast track trials, small claims, stage 3 hearings and various civil applications in the County Court and High Court. She is regularly instructed to draft pleadings.
She is a contributor to the APIL Personal Injury Law, Practice and Precedents loose-leaf book, recently editing the chapter on Expert Evidence.
Having worked as an IMCA, a Community Advocate and a Paid Person’s Representative, Jasmine is experienced in issues of mental capacity and the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
She has frequently worked with, and for, vulnerable people; clients with communication needs or learning difficulties; and those in mental health crisis. She has a practical approach and is particularly adept at explaining complicated legal proceedings in simple terms.
She has recently been instructed in wardship applications; by the local authority in Forced Marriage Protection Order proceedings and in DoLS proceedings.
Jasmine is a member of the Court of Protection Bar Association.
Jasmine brings her experience of supporting families at INQUEST into her growing practice.
She acts in inquests raising issues of state accountability (including where Article 2 is engaged), as well as where matters of health and social care are concerned. Her complimentary clinical negligence practice is of particular assistance in medical inquests.
Jasmine understands the difficulties that families can face when navigating traumatic inquest proceedings and brings a personable and sensitive approach.
She is a member of the INQUEST Lawyers’ Group and accepts instructions on behalf of families.
Jasmine enjoys a busy criminal practice in which she prosecutes and defends, and regularly appears in Crown and Magistrates’ Courts on both the London and Midlands circuits. She is a Grade 2 CPS Prosecutor.
As well as conducting trials in her own right, she is frequently instructed as junior counsel. In the last year Jasmine was led as the prosecution junior in two separate murder cases in which the defendants raised the defence of diminished responsibility – both defendants were convicted. Her multi-disciplinary practice was a particular advantage in considering the psychiatric expert evidence.
She is currently assisting in an offshore investigation into corruption and money laundering.
Jasmine welcomes instructions in private prosecutions.
Jasmine is regularly instructed within children law, in both private and public proceedings. She acts for local authorities, parents and children via their guardians and has appeared in Fact-Finding Hearings, Final Hearings and in applications at the High Court.
In her private practice Jasmine is regularly instructed in cases which raise allegations of domestic violence and sexual abuse.
As an assisting lawyer for Not Beyond Redemption she acts for mothers in prison, assisting them to re-establish contact with their child.
Jasmine welcomes instructions in relation to modern slavery and trafficking, especially in cases which engage the sometimes-overlapping areas of personal injury, criminal and family law.
