Their client was alleged to have acted as a ‘controller’, coordinating, directing and funding couriers who smuggled drugs in suitcases through UK airports, as part of an organised crime network said to be operating in North London.
The Crown relied upon his previous Class-A drug-trafficking convictions (including a conviction arising from EncroChat material) as bad character. The evidence extended across at least eight overseas jurisdictions and involved covert surveillance, financial records, multiple mobile telephones attributed to the defendants and convicted couriers, more than a million rows of call data, and wide-ranging digital material, including a WhatsApp Pen Register Trap and Trace Order.
Following a 15-week trial, their client was acquitted on all counts.
