A murder trial at Luton Crown Court ended with a life sentence with a 32 year minimum term.
David Matthew was instructed by Thames Chiltern CPS to prosecute Simon Lewis for the murder of Mr Roberts. Lewis knew his victim and had borrowed money from him. The prosecution case was that on Easter Monday 2019 Lewis went to get a further small loan; Mr Roberts’ refusal led to a quarrel ending with Lewis stabbing him to death. Mr Roberts body was found 2 days later. Some of Lewis’ movements were caught on CCTV; and he stole a phone from Mr Roberts, which he then used to buy crack cocaine. The jury disbelieved his attempts to explain. Mrs Justice Cheema Grubb decided that this was a murder “done for gain” and passed the lengthy sentence.
The case has been reported by ITV and can be viewed here.
