Anwar Nashashibi is a highly regarded advocate and lawyer who appears in serious and complex criminal and personal injury cases.

Anwar is instructed by defence and prosecution teams in particularly difficult and sensitive cases across the spectrum of serious crime, including serious sex cases, murder, drug conspiracies, complex fraud, bribery, corruption, and money laundering. He is frequently chosen in cases involving child and vulnerable witnesses. He is a grade 4 prosecutor and a member of the Rape and Serious Sexual Offences, Counter Terrorism, Serious Crime and Fraud panels.

Anwar is frequently instructed in relation to complex and sensitive investigations by both public and private clients, who value his ability to master detailed facts in diverse circumstances and distil them into clear submissions. He has many years’ experience providing advice in such cases in jurisdictions around the world. His practice in financial crime and off-shore litigation has provided experience of associated civil litigation, including asset freezing and recovery.

His personal injury practice encompasses defendant child abuse cases, and analogous situations where private and public bodies are said to be liable for the tortious conduct of others.

He has dealt with expert evidence in many areas including: complex brain injuries and other medical evidence, blood spattering, bio-mechanics, hawala banking, company formation, share issues and manipulation and DNA. He is chosen for cases involving child and vulnerable witnesses.

  • HMAG of Isle of Man v Joseph Marshall (2022) – Defended former head of the Island’s care home for historic sexual offences against children in his care.
  • R v Povey (2022) – Leading junior in prosecution of neurodiverse defendant for historic child rape case involving 15 victims.
  • R v Rugaramah & Ors (2021) – Prosecuted three adults for child cruelty and physical abuse of 5 children. Witnesses aged 5 and above.
  • R v Hutchinson (2018) – Northampton CC – Prosecution of historic sex case – rape, including anal rape, and indecent assault of four children.
  • R v Barnes & Ors (2018) – Chelmsford Crown Court – Led the prosecution of 6 defendants for conspiracy to defraud elderly people.
  • R v Maw & Ors (2018) – Nottingham Crown Court – Led the prosecution of 6 defendants in a prosecution of an organised crime organisation, charges including prohibited weapons, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and assisting an organised crime group.

Financial Crime, Offshore & Regulatory

Anwar has specialised in fraud, money laundering and corruption for many years, receiving instructions in high profile and high value cases in the UK and abroad. He has dealt with cases involving corruption, hawala banking, manipulation of off-shore trust and corporate structures, share price and financial instrument manipulation and tax evasion. A former member of the A panel of SFO approved counsel, he defends SFO prosecutions.

He has substantial experience of offshore and international work, having been instructed by private and public clients in Jersey, Guernsey, Bahrain, TCI and the Isle of Man. While such cases often concern financial misconduct and asset recovery, he accepts instructions across the spectrum of criminal and regulatory law, appearing with a special advocate’s licence in the Isle of Man’s most notable sex case.

Anwar has considerable experience of cross-border investigations, having worked with authorities in multiple jurisdictions in Africa, Asia, the US and Europe. In doing so he has advised on issues of state immunity, extradition and jurisdiction as well as international co-operation.

Anwar is frequently instructed to advise in relation to investigations. He has conducted compulsory interviews in fraud, corruption and money laundering investigations, and advised private clients in relation to such interviews.

  • Current Investigation – Instructed to advise the Economic and Financial Crime Bureau in Guernsey in relation to a suspected international investment fraud with losses of £55m.
  • R v Rush & Ors (2023) – Leading junior in prosecution of four men for conspiracy to defraud with losses in excess of £1m.
  • HMAG of Isle of Man v Joseph Marshall 2022 – Defended the head of a care home accused of serious sexual offences against children in his care, following a public inquiry by Tynwald. Defence disclosure requests led Tynwald to pass a statute adopting the English Bill of Rights as Manx Law, resulting in submissions on parliamentary privilege in relation to an abuse of process application.
  • Anonymous – Instructed by Fieldfisher to represent a multi-national corporation in High Court litigation relating to a suspected investment fraud.
  • AG of Jersey v Gichuru & Okemo – Instructed to extradite and prosecute a former Kenyan Finance Minister and former head of the Kenyan electricity utility for laundering the proceeds of corruption. The relevant Jersey company was prosecuted and convicted in Jersey.
  • Anonymous – Instructed by Mishcon de Reya to advise a Middle Eastern Aluminium Producer that was conducting an international investigation into corruption and money laundering.
  • AG of Jersey v Michel & Gallichan – Investigation and prosecution of a Jersey financial service provider for laundering the proceeds of tax evasion in Jersey’s most extensive and complex case of its type.
  • Instructed by Hickman & Rose to advise a defendant to the current prosecution in the TCI for corruption offences in relation to property purchases and development by overseas developers and alleged abuse of the special rules applicable to “belongers” of the TCI.

Personal Injury

Anwar specialises in the Tort and Human Rights Act liability of local authorities and other bodies in relation to alleged abuse.
