7BR’s Caroline Finney represented the family in the inquest touching the death of Daniel Ryan.
The Inquest jury found Daniel died from pneumonia alone in a police cell. Inadequate police checks meant Daniel never received any healthcare. Having previously been left open, Article 2 was engaged at the close of proceedings. It became clear during questioning that officers were conducting forbidden ‘spy hole’ checks in Daniel’s final hours and there was a lack of clarity as to whether APP Guidelines required interaction with detainees.
The Coroner has requested information from the College of Policing about their guidelines on welfare checks and further information on how the police conduct those checks in Northumbria.
