7BR’s Kat Shields acted for the prosecution in the case R v Clive Hawker.
The defendant set fire to his own home, trapping a woman inside who was later rescued by a police officer. The fire spread to the house next door, endangering the people in that property.
The defendant pleaded guilty to arson offences on the first day of his trial. He was sentenced to 11 years’ imprisonment on 12 May, having been found to be dangerous.
At the sentencing, the Judge gave the police officer who rescued the woman a judicial commendation, and gave a High Sheriff’s award to two members of the public who ran into the defendant’s home to assist the rescue efforts.
