On Monday 28 April, the Lampard Inquiry into deaths of mental health inpatients in Essex resumed, at Arundel House in London.
The Lampard Inquiry has been established to investigate the circumstance surrounding the deaths of mental health inpatients under the case of NHS Trusts in Essex between 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2023.
It is the first public inquiry specifically looking into mental health deaths in England. Baroness Kate Lampard CBE is the Chair.
From 28 April to 15 May, the Inquiry is hearing important contextual evidence in various forms. The full running order of witnesses and evidence presentations is available here.
Kirsty Lea is Junior Counsel to the Inquiry. On Wednesday 30 April, Kirsty presented two papers that she has written for the Chair in relation to absconsion and ligature incident data. This hearing can be viewed on YouTube here.
The media is following the hearing with interest and the BBC have quoted that Kirsty said: “Only once the Inquiry is satisfied that it has the fullest available data will it be able to conclude whether or not a comprehensive review across the entire relevant period is even possible.” “If the conclusion is that such a review is not possible, that – in itself – will be informative.”
The hearing is ongoing and set to continue until Thursday 15 May.
