James Weston represents children’s services at jury inquest.
Angela Mittal was murdered on 26 December 2018 by her husband following years of domestic abuse, including coercive and controlling behaviour. An inquest was held for two weeks in July 2024 to consider the actions of public authorities involved with Angela and her family at or around the time of her death.
James represented Wokingham Borough Council, who were undertaking a child and family assessment under s.17 Children Act 1989. Having heard submissions at the conclusion of the evidence, the coroner determined – contrary to rulings – that Article 2 was not engaged and that, as regards Wokingham Borough Council, there was no safe evidence of any errors/causative involvement to be left to the jury.
The jury later returned a conclusion of unlawful killing and identified six failures on the part of the police but that the failures did not contribute to the death. The Coroner made reports to prevent future deaths to the police force and the National Police Chief Council.
