The Rt Hon Lord Judge (19.5.41 – 7.11.23)
Member of Chambers 1965-1988
Appointed to the High Court 1988
Lord Chief Justice 2008-2013
Convener of the Crossbench peers in the House of Lords 2019-2023
We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Lord Judge, a former member of Chambers and much-loved friend and colleague to those working at 7BR.
Igor left the Bar after 25 years in practice, and then spent a further 25 years as a judge. When speaking in Chambers in 2019, Igor described leaving the Bar as giving up a profession which had brought him huge professional fulfilment, wide friendships, and collegiate support. He said he had been very lucky.
It was, of course, so much more than luck that earned Igor the love, affection, and respect of others. Wise and selfless, he provided encouragement to those around him or who sought his views, and despite his enormous workload he always found the time to respond to the personal or professional challenges and achievements experienced by others. We will treasure his responses.
Igor’s contributions at Chambers events were inspirational and heartfelt. He spoke of the privilege and responsibility he felt when acting for an individual, of the importance of Chambers providing support and encouragement in good times and bad, and, in the context of his own career, of how he felt that he was standing on the shoulders of giants. But he spoke most of all of the love and support of his wife, Judith, to whom he owed so much.
7BR sends love and condolences to Judith, their children and grandchildren.
Igor’s portrait and biography greet those who enter our building. We will keep alive the memory of one of the giants upon whose shoulders we all stand.
