7BR’s Andrew Wheeler KC and Peter Eguae represented a Dutch National client, who was originally charged with offences of Fraud, Money Laundering and Theft of IOTA Cryptocurrency to a value of approximately £10 million from victims across the world.
The technical knowledge and skills required to implement the theft were extremely sophisticated, and the resulting five-year cybercrime investigation – initiated by EUROPOL – was described by the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit as ‘like nothing the investigation team had ever experienced’.
On the second day of the trial, the client pleaded Guilty on an agreed basis to Theft of a much reduced cryptocurrency value – namely £2.1 million – and as a result was sentenced to a term of imprisonment which will shortly permit his return to Holland for the first time since his extradition therefrom.
Andrew and Peter were instructed by TIMOTHY THOMPSON of Kangs Solicitors.
