Following a four day trial the defendant was found not guilty by reason of insanity and therefore criminally insane on charges of attempted murder, two charges of wounding with intent and possession of a knife. During the trial the court had agreed evidence from the prosecution and defence about the severe mental illness of the defendant.
In this case, the three victims were strangers to the defendant when they were subjected to this horrifying attack on the night bus in October 2021 outside Mile End tube station.
On 29 September 2022, the defendant was made subject to an indefinite hospital order with a section 41 restriction indicating that he will not be released without the express governance of the Home Office.
Maryam Syed was instructed by CPS London from the outset and throughout.
