Judicial Review
Members of the team have acted for claimants and defendants in a diverse range of public law challenges to the decisions of public and local authorities, government departments, the prison services, the police, NHS trusts and disciplinary and regulatory bodies. Our expertise encompasses prisoners' rights, sports law, healthcare and financial regulation. We have considerable experience of criminal judicial review.
Examples of cases in which we have been involved include the challenge:
- brought by a "supergrass" in custody who was claiming that the prison authorities had failed to keep him sufficiently safe and that the police had not carried an adequate risk assessment in relation to his custody;
- brought by a social worker to a local authority decision to refer allegations of abuse to the Secretary of State;
- to the decision of the General Medical Council not to disclose to three defendant doctors material which was to be provided to an inquiry to be held by its Professional Practice Committee into the doctors' conduct;
- to a statutory health authority's refusal to fund gender-reassignment surgery;
- to the refusal of the Legal Services Commission to provide public funding in a maintenance dispute;
- concerning the operation of the Public Order Act during an animal rights protest against Huntingdon Life Sciences in Cambridge.
