"Smashing the Criminals' E-Bazaar"
20 December 2007
E-crime is an increasing concern for law enforcement and individuals concerned about internet and banking security. Bryn Wellman was a member of "Shadowcrew" - an online criminal marketplace - and, with others, operated a sophisticated international system to steal thousands of credit card details. By 2004, this international network was estimated to have trafficked at least 1.7 million stolen credit card numbers and caused losses amounting to £2.1M.
Wellman received a total of a total of 10 years imprisonment for two online internet banking scams. The case also concerned the remote deployment of a Trojan virus into other computers, the first of its kind to be prosecuted. Jennifer Carter-Manning was junior counsel for the prosecution.
