New Head of Chambers for 7 Bedford Row.
We are pleased to announce that Simeon Maskrey QC will become Head of Chambers as from 14th April 2010. Simeon takes over from Kate Thirlwall QC following her appointment as a Justice of the High Court.
Long recognised as a leading QC by both Chambers UK and the Legal 500, Simeon was called to the Bar in 1977 and took silk in 1995. His practice is focused on clinical negligence, personal injury and product liability cases. He also acts for defendants in professional negligence actions, particularly those arising out of a medical context and undertakes disciplinary and public law work. Simeon sits as a Recorder and a Deputy High Court Judge.
He takes over as Head of Chambers as 7 Bedford Row continues to establish itself as a leading set both nationally and internationally. In the last year alone, members of Chambers have acted in a number of prominent cases including:
-
- The decision of the European Court of Justice in a long running product liability case (O’Byrne v Aventis Pasteur);
-
- The judgment of the House of Lords on the ambit of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (Smith v Northamptonshire County Council);
-
- The decision of the Court of Appeal as to whether the Crown Court had jurisdiction to try a cartel offence under the Enterprise Act 2002 where that offence bore on trade within the European Union (R v IB);
- - The decision of the Court of Appeal on the proper interpretation of the scheme operated to compensate members of the armed forces injured while on duty (Secretary of State for Defence v Duncan & Anor);
- - The prosecution of a paranoid schizophrenic for the murder of a police officer (R v Tennyson Obih);
- - The independent inquiry into events at Airedale General Hospital surrounding the deaths of three patients and the arrest for murder of a nurse.
We continue to be involved in a number of claims arising from the actions of private security companies in Iraq and in ongoing cases in Hong Kong and the Cayman Islands.
Commenting on his appointment, Simeon said “I feel privileged at becoming Head of such a successful and forward thinking set of Chambers. Through Kate’s leadership we have prospered in a difficult market. I have no doubt that we will continue to do so.”.
