CLINICAL NEGLIGENCE
Dr Peter Ellis is ranked by The Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners as a leading junior in clinical negligence and healthcare law at the London Bar. He is instructed by many of the UK's leading clinical negligence firms on complex clinical negligence cases, including birth and brain injury claims. His practice benefits from his experience as a former hospital doctor specialising in internal medicine, and as a former solicitor at Davies Arnold Cooper, London, specialising in healthcare litigation.

Recent cases include:
Wilson v Kapadia & Shaikh: permanent loss of bowel and bladder function following novel radical laparoscopic prostatectomy. Out of court settlement £370,000.
Defoe v Luton & Dunstable Hospitals NHS Trust. Failure to diagnose congenital cardiac arrhythmia, brain damage. Out of court settlement, capital value £4.0M (Leading Counsel, for quantum only, Nigel Godsmark QC).
Hayhurst v Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust: brain injury during radiological vascular procedure. Out of court settlement, capital value £5.5M (Leading Counsel, for quantum only, Adrian Whitfield QC)
Ashton v Yorkshire & Humber SHA: cerebral palsy case dating from 1984. Out of court settlement 15 June 2007, capital value £4.1M (Leading Counsel, for quantum only, John Cherry QC).

Dr Ellis is also an accredited mediator. He qualified at the Centre for Dispute Resolution in 1999. He undertook further training with the ADR Group, which included co-mediating a substantial clinical negligence cerebral palsy claim. He has undertaken numerous mediations for the ADR scheme at Central London County Court. He was recently appointed as the mediator in a clinical negligence dispute involving a leading London fertility clinic.

Dr Ellis writes extensively on his areas of legal expertise. He is the author and editor of the clinical negligence chapter in Butterworths’ Personal Injury Litigation Service. He is an assistant editor of Tottel’s Law of Limitation, and a regular contributor on clinical negligence topics to the new electronic law journal PIBULJ (XPL Publishing).

Dr Ellis is also a regular speaker and chairman at national and regional clinical negligence conferences and meetings. Recent engagements include:
- Speaker on “expert evidence in birth injury claims”, annual C5 Advanced Obstetric Negligence Forum, London, 2008
- Chairman of the annual AvMA new fee earners’ clinical negligence conference, Birmingham, 2008
-Provision of in-house training on expert report writing and giving evidence in court for the Medicines & Healthcare Regulatory Agency and the Royal College of Surgeons. 

Dr Ellis is a member of the Professional Negligence Bar Association, the Medico-Legal Society, the Society of Doctors in Law, and the Faculty of Forensic & Legal Medicine at the Royal College of Physicians of London.
