Samantha Jones represented CAFCASS in a 17-day inquest before Senior Coroner Mairin Casey at Nottingham Coroner’s Court. The inquest was established to look into the circumstances leading to the death of a 7-year-old girl, Shanay Walker.
On 29 March 2017, the Coroner handed down a narrative conclusion. She found that Shanay Walker was a victim of sustained serious physical and emotional abuse for a two-year period while in the care of her paternal Aunt, Kay Ann Morris, who had been approved as a Special Guardian in September 2012. She died as result of injury to her brain caused by blunt trauma which was an inflicted non-accidental injury. The Coroner decided not to make a report on Preventing Future Deaths. A Serious Case Review will now seek to publish its findings.
