Nigel Rumfitt QC interviewed for BBC Radio 4’s ‘Law in Action

21 July 2008

‘Law in Action’ is BBC Radio 4’s weekly programme covering new developments in the law. Following an earlier appearance in June, Nigel Rumfitt QC has been interviewed again by the programme. Nigel defended Marcus Ellis, one of four men convicted of the New Year 2003 killings of two sisters, Letisha Shakespeare and Charlene Ellis. The case attracted widespread interest for its use of anonymous witnesses. During the trial, some witnesses were given pseudonyms, had their voices disguised electronically, and were hidden from the defendants.

Nigel was asked to discuss the consequences of the recent decision of the House of Lords in R v Davis on the use of anonymous witnesses and the impact of the new Criminal Evidence (Witness Anonymity) Act 2008, which came into force today.

The programme will be broadcast tomorrow, 22 July 2008, at 4 p.m.
