Dr Peter Ellis is in great demand for his expertise in relation to coroners' inquests, where he uses his experience as an Assistant Deputy Coroner in London since 2000. He is regularly instructed in complex healthcare cases, including cases involving medical, surgical and obstetric treatment, medicinal products and devices, and healthcare related deaths in prisons, nursing and residential care homes.

Dr Ellis also undertakes cases involving workplace accidents, and road traffic accidents where issues of sub-standard clinical treatment arise.

Dr Ellis has represented bereaved families, insurers, pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers, andhealthcare regulators. He undertakes a significant amount of related fatal accident litigation.

Dr Ellis also has broad experience of healthcare regulation dating to his practice as a healthcare solicitor at Davies Arnold Cooper, London. This included representing members of the British Psychology Society at disciplinary hearings, and representing individual doctors through their medical defence unions.

  • Riley Croft deceased, St Pancras Coroner’s Court, jury inquest. Gross failures of midwifery and obstetric care leading to early neonatal death from cerebral hypoxia, neglect verdict.
  • Re Havard deceased, Swansea Coroner’s Court, jury inquest. Gross failures of paediatric anaesthesia, resulting in fatal neonatal air embolism, neglect verdict.
  • Stratford deceased, Southwark Coroner’s Court, jury inquest, failures of anti-coagulation monitoring leading to death of prisoner detained at HMP Belmarsh from brain haemorrhage.
  • Steinker & Burland deceased, Bradford Coroner’s Court, jury inquest, failures of psychiatric monitoring leading to double railway suicide of two patients detained under the Mental Health Act 1983.
  • Pearce deceased, Medway Coroner’s Court, jury inquest, health & safety failures relating to work at heights, leading to fall and fatal head injuries.
  • Staley deceased, Hornsea Coroner’s Court, gross failures of Metropolitan Police 999 service, fatal cocaine overdose.
  • Bennett deceased, Amersham Coroner’s Court, widely reported case involving a young female pedestrian sustaining fatal head injuries when struck by a mountain bike on a pavement.
  • Hubley deceased: Huddersfield Coroner’s Court, fatal haemorrhage complicating laparoscopic cholecystectomy in independent treatment centre, absence of blood products on site, neglect verdict. A widely reported case which featured in a BBC Panorama documentary on fatalities at independent surgical treatment centres.

Dr Ellis is a member of the Inquest Lawyers Group, the Medico-Legal Society, the Society of Doctors in Law, and the Faculty of Forensic & Legal Medicine at the Royal College of Physicians of London.
