Gemma is a criminal practitioner with a key specialism in all issues related to extradition. She is instructed for both the prosecution and defence in extradition cases, including in the High Court. Gemma has acted in a number of challenges to extradition by way of judicial review.
Gemma was junior counsel for Rwanda in their request for four men wanted for crimes committed in Rwanda in 1994. In connection with this case, Gemma attended Rwanda to advise on extradition, which resulted in extradition requests according to a special arrangement between the UK and Rwanda in respect of four men whose extradition is sought for genocide and crimes against humanity. Gemma appeared as junior counsel in the High Court appeal in respect of the four men.
Gemma has extensive experience in drafting extradition requests and European arrest
warrants. She has an interest in Mutual Legal Assistance. Gemma has represented the Crown as junior counsel and alone in applications to stay proceedings as a Bennett style abuse of process.
In general crime, Gemma appears in a variety of cases including those involving causing grievous bodily harm with intent, robbery, threats to kill, burglary, racially aggravated harassment and food safety.
Gemma undertakes child abduction work, involving the use of the 1980 Hague Convention, Brussells II Revised regulation and the UK-Pakistan Judicial protocol. She also undertakes public law care proceedings, and is particularly skilled at dealing with the heightened emotions such cases may cause.
