Conor has a broad Civil practice but also practiced criminal law until late 2009 and advises and acts in court on a broad range of personal injury, clinical negligence, regulatory and commercial matters, in the main.

Conor had a 16-year career in finance before qualifying as a barrister. He was European Head of Foreign Exchange and Global Head of Currency Derivatives at Bank of America.  He has very extensive practical experience of trading financial markets and risk management.

Whilst in banking Conor sat on a number of company boards as Bank of America’s representative, including EBS, the world’s largest interdealer currency platform. Conor also sat on the Bank of England’s Joint Standing Committee on Foreign exchange and the European central Banks Market Contact Committee.  Conor also negotiated Russian Debt on behalf of Bank of America at the Moscow Club meetings after the Russian Default in 1998. Conor oversaw much of the bank’s proprietary risk in Foreign Exchange and related products.

Conor currently sits on a number of company boards.

Conor is an Accredited Mediator and has been appointed to the board of arbiters for the RIPE NCC (European governance body for internet resources).

Personal Injury

Conor has been instructed in many areas of personal injury: employers’ liability road traffic accidents; Highways Acts claims and occupiers’ liability. Conor advises, drafts and acts in court for both Claimants and Defendants.

Conor has dealt with a number of fraudulent passenger and driver claims.

Conor regularly acts for local authorities in all matters of personal injury arising from vicarious liability, highways and employment matters. Conor has a regular practice defending highways claims.

Conor has acted regularly Defendants in historic sexual abuse cases, in actions against educational and care institutions, failure to remove and all aspects of Local Authority care.

As a pupil Conor worked on the H case at trial and the C case in the Court of Appeal that were conjoined appeals heard by the House of Lords in A v Hoare [2008] UKHL 6 

 

Clinical Negligence

Conor is instructed in the main to act for claimants in clinical negligence claims. Conor advises on liability, quantum and drafts pleadings regularly in clinical negligence matters. Conor has represented various parties at Coroner’s inquests.

Inquest matters and instructions have included fatalities caused by surgical intervention, lack thereof and failure to diagnose.

Recent cases include negligent knee surgery, perforation of the uterus, negligent prescription and failure to adequately monitor the administering of thyroxine.

 

Commercial law

Conor has advised and appeared in Court on a number of commercial cases involving contract disputes and complicated trust and company matters. UCC v Bender involved allegations of civil fraud in a hedge fund setting, with a complex structure and off-shore commercial issues. Conor has handled many commercial mediations. Conor is currently instructed on a long-running trust case with substantial commercial issues. He has advised on a claim for economic damages arising from works associated with compulsory purchase by TFL and claims for monies outstanding on a complex series of hotel management contracts.

 

Product Liability

Conor has advised on liability for many consumer products, including domestic fixtures and fittings and medical equipment

Conor was instructed by the Claimants in Bailey & Others v GlaxoSmithKline  or the Seroxat litigation.

 

Public and Regulatory law

Conor has appeared in the High Court on a number of matters and has advised extensively on matters of Judicial Review. He has also appeared in the High Court on matters of electoral law.

Conor has advised local authorities extensively on matters of Highways, historic sexual abuse and nuisance.

Conor has advised extensively on the new disclosure regime for those working with children and vulnerable people and made a number of applications for judicial review in this area.

 

Key cases

United Capital Corporation v Bender &Ors: a major civil trust and fraud case featuring complex disclosure and privilege issues and hedge funds operating in a number of offshore jurisdictions.

R v Cater & Others prosecution involving complex inventory positions in industry.

A v Hoare[2008] UKHL 6 - As a pupil Conor worked on the H case at trial and the C case in the Court of Appeal that were conjoined appeals heard by the House of Lords. A v Hoare is the leading case on limitation in personal injury.

Dunnett v Devon CC where a convicted murderer sought compensation for historic abuse.

Bicz v Nahome 2010 Successful trial in the QBD on liability for the Defendant in a case against a motorist for injuries suffered when a cyclist was seriously injured in a collision with a car

Bailey & Others v GlaxoSmithkline - Conor is instructed in a large class action product liability case involving claims of personal injury caused by the srugSeroxat

 

Mediation/Arbitration

Conor is an Accredited Mediator having mediated many commercial disputes, as well as personal injury, landlord and tenant and other civil disputes.

Conor has been appointed to the board of arbiters of the RIPE NCC (the European internet resource (ip) allocator and registry and governance body).

 

Public Access

Conor can accept direct instructions from the public in line with the Bar Council guidelines.

 

General Crime

Conor practiced in criminal matters representing both Defence and Prosecution, primarily in the Crown Court. For his first five years of call, until late 2009.
