Barbara Connolly QC is described by clients as a “highly skilled advocate”, “meticulous in preparation”, and “always approachable for advice”. In cases in which she is instructed Barbara combines specialist expertise with innate, commonsense and an understanding of the practicalities involved. She has been a specialist in Child and Family Law for over 20 years, and undertakes disputes surrounding children and ancillary relief.
In private law children cases, Barbara is instructed in respect of applications for residence, shared residence, removal from the jurisdiction and relocation cases. She is tenacious and fearless on behalf of those she represents. In the field of family finance and divorce, Barbara acts for clients of both moderate and substantial means, employing negotiation and/or advocacy skills in accordance with the needs of the case.
She has experience in advising local authorities in relation to care proceedings, adoption, inherent jurisdiction and wardship, and in judicial review proceedings particularly in respect of decisions relating to local authority responsibilities towards children and families, and vulnerable adults, and in respect of issues concerning the media and publicity. Barbara also acts regularly for those suffering from disability or mental incapacity – both children and adults – and provides expert guidance to local authorities and others on legal issues relating to the support and care of mentally incapacitated adults and minors and cases involving sterilisation and abortion. She has advised and acted in cases involving issues of medical treatment, including withdrawal of medical treatment, and surrogacy. She is regularly instructed in the Family Division and also appears in the Court of Protection.
Barbara has experience of public inquiry work. She has also appeared in the Care Standards Tribunal, and in the administrative court challenging the decisions of that tribunal.
