Alex took a double first in history at Oxford, as well as a postgraduate degree, before converting to law at City University in London. During his legal training he won first prize in the annual City Criminal Law Essay, first prize in the Lincoln’s Inn Crowther Shield advocacy competition, and third prize in a mooting competition judged by judges of the High Court and Court of Appeal. He is also a Lord Mansfield, Lord Haldane and Hardwicke Scholar of Lincoln’s Inn. He joined Chambers in October 2009 following the successful completion of a year’s pupillage.

During his pupillage Alex shadowed senior members of chambers and gained wide experience of civil, commercial, employment, disciplinary and criminal litigation. Since gaining his rights of audience, he has built extensively on that experience and is now regularly instructed to appear in Crown, county and magistrates’ courts, as well as in the employment tribunal. He has also appeared in the High Court and the Employment Appeal Tribunal.

On the civil side, Alex has been instructed to provide advice, drafting and advocacy in sizeable commercial and contractual disputes, involving private individuals as well as substantial companies. He has a keen interest in contract and negligence-based litigation, and has acted for claimants and defendants in numerous county court fast- and multi-track trials. He has experience of cases involving personal and corporate insolvency and is able to act where injunctive relief is sought at short notice in respect of winding up petitions. Alex has also acted in cases raising allegations of professional negligence, and regularly advises in personal injury matters, including those where the injured party is a child. He is willing to consider CFA instructions.

Alex’s criminal practice is predominantly based in the Crown Court and encompasses defence and prosecution work. He has experience of a sizeable variety of serious offences of physical and sexual violence, drugs, fraud, theft and burglary, and has honed his trial experience in a number of jury trials. He also regularly accepts instructions in his own right from insurers and private clients in a broad spectrum of motoring offences, and has acted at several interim hearings concerning allegations of homicide (murder and death by dangerous / careless driving).

Alex practises widely in the employment field: please click here for further details of his employment practice.
